Password Best Practices

Strong, unique passwords are your first line of defense. Here is what Computer Central requires — and recommends — for every account.

???? Minimum 16 characters
???? All employees
???? Review quarterly

????

The average data breach costs small businesses over $200,000 — and compromised passwords are the #1 cause. Following these practices takes about 10 minutes to set up and protects your business around the clock.

Password Requirements

Required for all accounts on Computer Central managed networks

✅ Minimum 16 characters
Longer is always better — aim for a passphrase like PurpleTacos!Rain47
✅ Mixed characters
Use uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
✅ Unique per account
Never reuse a password — if one account is breached, others stay safe
⚡ Change immediately if compromised
If you suspect a password was seen or shared, change it right away

????️ Use a Password Manager — Highly Recommended

A password manager generates, stores, and auto-fills strong unique passwords for every account — you only need to remember one master password. This is the single most effective thing you can do for your personal and business security.

????

Bitwarden
Free & open source — our top recommendation

????

1Password
Excellent for teams — great business features

????

LastPass
Widely used — free tier available

???? What NOT to Do

  • Do not write passwords on sticky notes near your computer or monitor
  • Do not share passwords via email, text, Teams, or any messaging app
  • Do not use personal information — no birthdays, pet names, or company names
  • Do not reuse passwords across work and personal accounts
  • Do not store passwords in your browser if you share your computer with others
???? Tip: If you need to share a password with IT, use a password manager's secure sharing feature — never paste it into an email or chat message.
