Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Setup Guide

Protect your Microsoft 365 account with a second layer of security — even if your password is stolen, attackers can not get in.

???? Requires a smartphone
⏱ Takes about 5 minutes
✅ Required for all managed accounts

????

MFA is required on all Microsoft 365 accounts managed by Computer Central. It adds a second step to your sign-in — usually a tap on your phone — so your account stays safe even if someone steals your password.

1️⃣

Step 1 — Download the Microsoft Authenticator App

Free on iOS and Android — do this first before touching your computer

On your smartphone:

  • iPhone: Open the App Store and search for Microsoft Authenticator
  • Android: Open Google Play and search for Microsoft Authenticator
???? Make sure you download the official app by Microsoft Corporation — the icon is a blue padlock with a white key.

2️⃣

Step 2 — Start MFA Enrollment on Your Computer

Do this on your work computer, not your phone

  1. Open a browser and go to aka.ms/mfasetup
  2. Sign in with your work email and password
  3. Click Add sign-in method, choose Authenticator app, and click Add
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts until you reach the QR code screen

3️⃣

Step 3 — Scan the QR Code with Your Phone

Links your phone to your Microsoft account

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
  2. Tap the + icon (top right corner)
  3. Choose Work or school account
  4. Point your phone camera at the QR code displayed on your computer screen — it will scan automatically

4️⃣

Step 4 — Approve the Test Notification

Confirms everything is working correctly

Microsoft will send a test push notification to your Authenticator app.

  1. When your phone buzzes, open the notification or the app
  2. Tap Approve (you may need to enter a 2-digit number shown on your computer)
  3. Your computer will confirm MFA is set up — you are done!
From now on: When you sign into Microsoft 365 on a new device or browser, you will get a push notification to approve on your phone. Just tap Approve and you are in.

????️ Common Issues & Fixes

Not getting the notification? Make sure your phone has internet access and notifications are enabled for the Authenticator app in your phone settings.

QR code not scanning? Hold your phone about 10–15 inches from the screen and make sure the whole QR code is visible.
