8 Signs an Email Is a Phishing Attack

Mismatched sender address
The display name says "Microsoft Support" but the actual email is from a random Gmail or lookalike domain.
Urgency & fear tactics
"Your account will be closed in 24 hours" — artificial urgency is designed to make you act before you think.
Suspicious or shortened links
Hover before you click. Legitimate companies don't use bit.ly or links that don't match their official domain.
Unexpected attachments
.exe, .zip, .docm, or .xlsm files you weren't expecting are a major red flag — especially from unknown senders.
Poor grammar & spelling
Legitimate organisations proofread. Sloppy language, odd phrasing, or inconsistent formatting are warning signs.
Requests for credentials or payment
No legitimate service will ever ask for your password or banking details via email. Period.
Brand impersonation
Emails mimicking Microsoft, DocuSign, PayPal, or your bank — with slightly off logos or formatting — are rampant.
Reply-to address doesn't match
The email appears to come from a colleague, but the Reply-To header routes to an attacker's account.
